Human females have XX sex chromosomes and produce eggs carrying only X chromosomes. Males have XY sex chromosomes, producing sperms with either X or Y chromosome. If an X-bearing sperm fertilizes the egg, the offspring is female (XX). If a Y-bearing sperm fertilizes the egg, the offspring is male (XY). Thus, paternal gamete determines the sex.
