Ethanol Oxidation and Esterification

Central Board of Secondary Education 2026 Slot 1 · CHEM · Hard · Carbon and its Compounds · 1 mark

Attempt either (a) or (b):

(a) A neutral organic compound 'A' (molecular formula C2H6OC_2H_6O) reacts with acidified K2Cr2O7K_2Cr_2O_7 and on oxidation gives an acidic compound 'B'. Compound 'A' reacts with compound 'B' on warming, in the presence of concentrated H2SO4H_2SO_4 to give a sweet smelling substance 'C'. What are A, B and C? Also write their structures.

OR

(b) Give reasons for the following: (i) Unsaturated hydrocarbons show addition reactions. (ii) Detergents are better cleansing agents than soaps. (iii) Carbon forms only covalent compounds.
